Till a few years ago, India was completely dependent on imports for many electronic products. Till four years ago, compressors used in ACs were not manufactured in the country. Many other major parts are imported. But now the situation has changed to a great extent. Now domestic manufacturing of many parts has increased and the reason for this is PLI scheme.

Jagran Bureau, New Delhi. With the help of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, AC and LED components manufacturing has started gaining momentum. Till four years ago, compressors used in ACs were not made in the country. Other major parts of AC and LED were also completely imported.

Now, value addition of more than 20 percent has started happening in these parts at the domestic level, which is targeted to be taken up to 75 percent in the next few years. In the year 2021, PLI scheme was introduced for the manufacturing of AC and LED components. Under this scheme, applications have been invited in three phases so far.

The effect of PLI scheme is visible

In the first phase, 15 companies, 40 in the second phase and 38 companies in the third phase were selected for production under the scheme. The companies selected under the third phase were announced on Monday. 11 out of 15 companies selected in the first phase have started production. Some of the 40 companies in the second phase have started production and the rest are also going to start production soon.

According to Sanjeev, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Promotion and Internal Trade, now about 80 lakh compressors are being manufactured annually in the country. Earlier, all the compressors used in AC manufacturing were imported. 1.1 crore ACs are being manufactured annually in the country and the components used in it are now being manufactured domestically.

AC sales will increase by 40 percent in 5 years

AC sales are expected to increase by 40 percent in the next five years. Till two years ago this growth rate was 15 percent. Clusters of AC and LED components manufacturing are being established in Noida, Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Nimrana and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan, Pune and Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Sanad in Gujarat and Sri City in Andhra Pradesh.

Sanjeev said that the 38 companies that have been selected for the third phase also include many MSME level companies which till now used to do job work for companies like Daikin, Voltas. Big companies like Hitachi, Panasonic, Haier, Daikin, Voltas, Havells, Blue Star will make AC components under the PLI scheme.

Many companies like Orient, Surya, Crumpton, Cosmo Film, Dixon, RK Lighting have come forward to manufacture components of LED lights. By the financial year 2028-29, these 38 companies will invest Rs 4121 crore.
