After shifting billion-dollar iPhone production to India, the company has now finalized plans to manufacture AirPods in India as well. These AirPods will be manufactured mostly for export. The special thing is that Apple is starting the manufacturing of AirPods in India in a situation where the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for hearable devices is not available, which is being given for the smartphone industry.

Apple will first start manufacturing AirPods casing at the Pune factory of American contract manufacturer Jabil and then start manufacturing AirPods at Foxconn’s new unit in Telangana. In 2021, Apple started iPhone manufacturing in India and in the financial year 2024, the company has exported iPhones worth about $ 14 billion, which is 14% of global production.

The company is rapidly increasing the production of iPhone in India.
According to a report by Times of India, Apple is rapidly increasing iPhone production in India and has also started manufacturing Pro series from this year. This work is being done with contract manufacturers like Foxconn, Pegatron and Tata Group. Tata recently took over the operations of Wistron’s Indian unit.

According to sources, production of AirPods will start from next year and they will also be sold in India. Apple aims to ramp up production to “a few billion dollars” very quickly. The company’s focus on exports means Apple will build a second large manufacturing center outside China. The company had the same strategy at the time of manufacturing iPhone.

No plans to manufacture MacBooks
The government is excited by this plan of Apple, because its premium products contribute significantly to the country’s export basket. However, Apple currently has no plans to manufacture MacBooks in India, while the government is encouraging laptop manufacturers to manufacture in India under the PLI scheme.
